·  Marijuana (марихуана) — нейтральна, найпоширеніша назва висушених квіток і листя рослини канабіс, які курять або використовують в інших формах. У медицині та законодавстві сьогодні дедалі частіше вживають слово cannabis (канабіс), а не marijuana.

·  Pot — розмовний сленг. Це просто неформальна назва марихуани. Приклади:

·  Reefer  — теж сленг, але більш старомодний. Історично це слово часто означало самокрутку з марихуаною (joint), хоча іноді ним називали і саму марихуану. Сьогодні його можна почути в старих фільмах, піснях або книгах, але в повсякденній мові воно зустрічається значно рідше.

 

Якщо дивитися на частоту вживання сьогодні:

1.    cannabis — офіційно, медично, юридично.

2.    marijuana — загальновживано, хоча поступово трохи витісняється словом cannabis.

3.    weed — найпоширеніший сучасний сленг.

4.    pot — теж дуже поширений, але трохи менш модний, ніж weed.

5.    reefer — переважно старомодне або стилістичне слово.

Тож якщо у фільмі хтось каже:

• Do you smoke weed? — «Ти куриш траву?»
• Do you smoke pot? — те саме, тільки іншим сленговим словом.
• He's smoking a reefer. — «Він курить косяк (самокрутку з марихуаною).»

В американських серіалах чи фільмах найчастіше зараз почуєте саме weed.

if anything	/ɪf ˈeniθɪŋ/	used to say that the opposite of what has just been mentioned is actually true		She doesn't look older. If anything, she looks younger.		якщо вже на те пішло; скоріше навпаки; якщо вже щось і можна сказати, то… Буквальна логіка: if anything can be said, then… → «якщо вже щось і можна сказати, то…». Часто вводить думку, протилежну попередній.
it's ridiculous	/ɪts rɪˈdɪkjələs/	used to say that something is unreasonable, silly, or absurd		They want us to pay $200 for this? It's ridiculous!		це смішно; це безглуздо; це абсурд
be off to	/bi ˈɒf tə/	to be leaving or going somewhere		I'm off to work. See you tonight!		вирушати / йти / їхати кудись.
be up	/biː ʌp/	to be awake and out of bed		I’ve been up since six.		не спати, вже встати. I’m up = я вже прокинувся/встав, а не обов’язково просто «я не сплю».
walk out	/wɔːk aʊt/	to leave suddenly, especially because you are angry or unhappy		He got angry and walked out.		піти, демонстративно вийти — часто раптово через образу, сварку або незгоду.
break up with sb	/breɪk ʌp wɪð/	to end a romantic relationship		She broke up with her boyfriend.		розійтися з кимось, припинити стосунки. Нейтральний і найпоширеніший варіант. На відміну від dump, не підкреслює жорстокість або односторонність рішення.
dump sb	/dʌmp/	to suddenly end a romantic relationship with someone		He dumped her by text.		кинути когось. Більш розмовне й різке, ніж break up with. She broke up with him = вона розійшлася з ним; She dumped him = вона його кинула, тобто ініціатива явно була її, часто з неприємним відтінком.
quit sb	/kwɪt ˈsʌmbədi/	to leave someone or end a relationship with them		She finally quit him and moved on.		зав’язати з кимось; покинути когось. Можливо, але не нейтральне повсякденне break up with. Звучить радше як «Все, я з ним зав’язала», ніби людина або стосунки стали чимось, від чого вирішили остаточно відмовитися.
call it quits	/ˌkɔːl ɪt ˈkwɪts/	to decide to stop doing something or end a relationship		After ten years together, they decided to call it quits.		поставити крапку; на цьому закінчити; розійтися; вирішити, що досить. Не лише про стосунки: можна call it quits у роботі, суперечці, грі тощо.
It’s been a while.	/ɪts bɪn ə waɪl/	a considerable amount of time has passed		Hi! It’s been a while!		Давно не бачились! / Давненько! / Минуло вже чимало часу. Дуже природна фраза при зустрічі після довгої перерви.
cheer up	/tʃɪə ʌp/	to become happier or make someone happier		Cheer up! Things will get better.		підбадьоритися / підбадьорити, розвеселити. Це про емоційний стан: людині сумно → ми намагаємося покращити їй настрій.
cheer on	/tʃɪə ɒn/	to encourage someone who is doing something, especially in a competition		We cheered our team on.		підбадьорювати, підтримувати вигуками під час якоїсь дії, особливо змагання. Cheer up → «Не сумуй!»; cheer someone on → «Давай! Ти зможеш!»
console	/kənˈsəʊl/	to comfort someone who is sad or upset		She tried to console him after the bad news.		втішати. Сильніше й серйозніше за cheer up: людині справді боляче/сумно, і ви її втішаєте, а не просто піднімаєте настрій.
