Complicated refers to something that is complex or has many interconnected parts, which makes it harder to deal with. It emphasizes the complexity or structure.

 For example: The situation is complicated because too many people are involved.

The reason for the distinction is that difficult focuses on effort, while complicated focuses on complexity. Something can be difficult but not complicated (e.g., running a marathon), or complicated but not difficult (e.g., understanding a family tree).
